How to check whether AI-generated study notes missed something

AI notes can be confident and incomplete at the same time. A short checklist for spotting gaps before they cost you marks.


AI-generated study notes have a specific failure mode: they're confident and incomplete at the same time. The prose reads beautifully, every sentence sounds authoritative, and yet the one worked example that's always on the exam is quietly missing.

The danger isn't that AI notes are obviously wrong. It's that they're plausibly partial. Here's how to check for gaps before they cost you marks.

Why AI notes go incomplete

A language model summarising your lectures is optimising for a fluent, coherent summary — not for coverage. If a topic was messy in the source material, the easiest way to stay fluent is to smooth it over or leave it out. You rarely notice an omission, because there's no blank space where the missing thing should be. The text just flows on.

So you can't check AI notes the way you'd proofread your own. You have to actively hunt for what isn't there.

The five-point gap checklist

1. Compare against the slide count

If a lecture had 40 slides and your notes cover six headings, ask what happened to the other 34. Slides are a rough table of contents. A summary that's dramatically shorter than the structure of the lecture is a summary that dropped something.

2. Check every formula has its variables defined

Formulas are where AI notes quietly break. Look for:

  • A formula stated without defining what each symbol means.
  • A worked example whose numbers don't actually follow from the formula above it.
  • A result quoted to a suspicious level of precision.

If you can't reproduce the worked example from the formula, treat both as unverified until you check the source.

3. Look for the lecturer's emphasis

Lecturers signal what matters: "this always comes up", "make sure you know this", "this is the part people lose marks on". Those signals live in the recording, not the slides. If your notes have no emphasis markers at all, they probably weren't built from the audio — and you're missing the examiner's hints.

4. Hunt for hedged or vague claims

Phrases like "generally", "it is often the case", or "this can be understood as" sometimes mark a spot where the model wasn't sure and papered over it. Flag them and verify against the original.

5. Demand a source for anything you'll rely on

This is the big one.

A claim you can't trace to a slide, page, or timestamp is a claim you can't check. Treat untraceable notes as a starting point, never as the final word.

Good notes link each key statement back to its source. If yours don't, your verification step is to add those links — and you'll find the gaps as you go, because the missing facts are the ones with nothing to point to.

Use a coverage view, not a vibe

The best defence against confident-but-partial notes is a coverage ledger: an explicit list of every source that existed, and whether it was actually processed and used.

Instead of asking "do these notes feel complete?" you ask "which of my 40 slides and 3 readings were actually included?" That turns a vague worry into a checkable fact. A source that was discovered but never used is exactly the gap you're looking for.

The habit that protects your marks

  1. Compare note length against the lecture's structure.
  2. Re-derive every formula and worked example.
  3. Confirm the lecturer's emphasis made it in.
  4. Flag hedged language and verify it.
  5. Insist on a source link for anything you'll rely on.
  6. Check a coverage view for sources that were skipped.
