How to turn lecture recordings into useful study notes

Start from a transcript, not the audio

A good transcript gives you three things:

Separate four kinds of information

When you write your notes, don't blend everything into one confident voice. Tag each piece by where it came from:

  1. Directly sourced — it's on the slide or clearly stated in the recording.
  2. Your own explanation — a paraphrase or connection you added.
  3. Inferred emphasis — the lecturer repeated it or flagged it as important.
  4. Uncertain — you couldn't quite hear it, or two sources disagree.

This sounds fussy, but it's the difference between notes you trust and notes you second-guess at 11pm. When something is tagged uncertain, you know to verify it. When it's tagged directly sourced with a slide number, you can stop worrying.

Keep the citation attached to the claim

The habit that pays off most: never write a fact without a pointer to where it came from. A slide number. A timestamp range. An announcement date.

If you can't say where a note came from, you can't quickly check it — and notes you can't check are notes you don't fully trust.
